Bangladesh was once part of Pakistan. It gained its independence on January 1972.

Brief History: After the withdrawal of British control over the region, Bangladesh became part of the country of Pakistan and was known as East Pakistan. In 1972, after an intense civil war between East and West Pakistan, Bangladesh gained its independence and became its own country.

Official name: People’s Republic of Bangladesh

Population: 149 million

Religion: Islam – 86%

The red sun of freedom on Bangladesh’s national flag symbolizes the blood shed to independence. The lush countryside is represented by the green field. Green also represents the traditional color of Islam. [2]
