Brief History: Bhutan became recognized as a country by the United Nations in 1971. Since that time, the country, which had been completely closed to outside influence, has become gradually more open to interaction with the outside world. After a century of absolute monarchy, an historic democratic vote in March 2008 transformed Bhutan into a constitutional monarchy. The current king will also step down in 2008, handing the position to his son.

The dragon on Bhutan’s national flag represents Druk, the Tibetan name for the Kingdom of Bhutan. The dragon’s white exterior symbolizes purity and the jewels clamped in the dragon’s claws stand for wealth. The orange part of the flag represents the Drukpas’ monasteries and Buddhist religious practices, while the saffron yellow field symbolizes the secular authority of the dynasty.[2]
