The Maldives became a republic in 1968.
Brief History: Maldives gained independence from Britain in 1965. It existed for three years under the rule of a sultanate until it became a republic in 1968. Maldives has experienced difficulty in maintaining its economy and was one of the countries most affected by the devastating tsunami that struck the region in 2004.

The green section of the national flag represents the many palm trees that are the life source for the Maldives. The blood sacrificed by the nation’s heroes is symbolized by the red. The white crescent is the symbol of the Islamic faith.[2]
