People Groups

South Asia has over 1,700 distinct people groups. A people group is a grouping together of people with similar linguistic, cultural and religious backgrounds. It is the largest group through which the Gospel can flow without encountering significant barriers of understanding and acceptance.

The vast majority of South Asia’s people groups, 1,400 are unreached with the Gospel. An unreached people group (UPG) is a people group in which less than 2 percent of the population is Evangelical Christian. These people groups may or may not have a Church Planting Movement started in them or an international Christian witness working among them.

Of these unreached people groups, 500 are designated unengaged and unreached. The Unengaged Unreached People Groups (UUPGs), people groups in which less than 2 percent of the population is Evangelical Christian and in which there is no church planting strategy under implementation, make up the Ends of the Earth.
