Setting healthy expectations prior to arrival in a new country is a difficult task. Please evaluate your personal preferences and living conditions. Begin to examine particulars of your day-to-day life. As you consider your life in North American compare these things with the realities of South Asia.

South Asia is:

Social: Everything is done in groups. It is always appropriate to bring someone with you. If you share information with one individual, consider it to be public knowledge. If you have food, it should be shared. There is no personal space. All personal belongings will be read, examined and looked through. The family is very important. Family obligations and family ties are very strong.

Crowded: There are over a billion people in this small region. The majority of the people are clustered tightly together. It is not unusual to see thousands of people in one day.

Sensory Overload: There are fragrant spices, colorful fabrics, loud noises, warm temperatures, and spicy foods. This is an intoxicating combination for the senses. It can be enjoyable and exciting and yet daunting at the same time. You can see and experience people-packed bazaars full of interesting handicrafts. You can even ride elephants down the center of town. It is an exciting place!

What should you expect?

  • Expect to be challenged and stretched in good ways.
  • Expect to take in a lot of new things.
  • Expect to see God move in incredible ways that you have never imagined!
  • Expect to be changed forever…more into the image of Christ!
  • "Expect great things from God, attempt great things for God."
