xpand a Team on theEdge
Expectations
Expand a Team Edgers will:
- Fill a specific role in an existing strategy
- Seek to understand the people group, strategy and role he or she is filling
- Be a learner and a trainer:
- Be a team player
- Share the Gospel
- Disciple new and existing believers
- Nurture small groups into churches
- Initiate church-planting movements
- Fill a specific role in an existing strategy: As an Expander, you will fill a position on an existing team. It is of the utmost importance that you accept a role that you are both willing and capable of fulfilling. If you have questions about specific requirements such as experience in backpacking, teaching certificates, or qualifications that are not listed but implied in the job description, please take the initiative to get more information before accepting the position. This will help to ensure good placement for you and the Strategy Coordinator who wrote the request.
- Seek to understand the people group, strategy and role he or she is filling: Even though much of the initial research on your people and a plan for reaching them may already be in place, you should be committed to learning everything that the Strategy Coordinator is willing to teach you about this. Make it your ambition to share the team vision and strategy as if you wrote it yourself. Get close to your supervisor and familiarize yourself with his or her goals and expectations for your term and then live up to them or openly communicate why they cannot be met.
- Be a learner and a trainer: Always be eager to find new and better ways of doing things. Be quick to admit when you don’t have all the answers – or any of them. As you learn, be faithful to pass that information on to others (nationals, teammates and other people in our region). When someone invests in you, give it your all so as not to waste their time. Then do your part to give to others what was entrusted to you.
- Be a team player: No matter what your job description says, there will be times when you will need to jump in and do something you would prefer to avoid for the overall good of the team and fulfillment of the strategy. Be flexible and willing to go beyond what you are comfortable doing. Care for your teammates – really love them, even when it means confronting ungodly behavior or confessing your own sin. Grow in your appreciation of being part of the body of Christ.
- Share the Gospel: Evangelism may not be your spiritual gift or a strength, but out of obedience you should purpose to personally share with as many people as possible during your time in South Asia – after all, it doesn’t get any worse than an eternity separated from God.
- Disciple new and existing believers: It is important that you not neglect the nurturing of believers. This may be those you lead to faith or those God brings to you who are immature believers but willing to learn and obey. Discipleship is often challenging as believers must daily choose to put off the sin that hinders them and run the race set before them. It is your responsibility to encourage them and teach them how to do this by pouring your life into those who are faithful.
- Nurture small groups into churches: The goal for new believers is always to meet together as a local church. You must be intentional about this from the beginning. It is through local churches that CPMs will start.
- Initiate church-planting movements: Your understanding of and commitment to facilitating CPMs will be of the utmost importance as you influence other believers. It is through your passion to see God glorified in this way that others will catch hold of the CPM vision for your people group.
Expanders will likely spend some time helping to establish a platform (either team or personal) as directed by the supervisor. There will also need to be time and energy given to keep team relationships healthy. This should be seen as time used to grow you into the image of Christ and show love to the community in which you live – they will know us by our love for one another.
Throughout your term, there will be periodic times when Edgers will meet together for sharing, fellowship, additional training/equipping and rest. These meetings as well as additional on-site training must be approved or initiated by your supervisor in order for you to participate. theEdge leadership team will serve as a resource for both you and your supervisor and will provide pastoral care, spiritual advice and mentorship as needed.
