Description
Express teams focus on Unengaged Unreached and Uncreached People Groups made up of oral communicators through methods including observation, participation and oral communication — stories, proverbs, genealogies, dramas, songs, chants, dances, ceremonies, rites of passage, oral histories and epic stories. As an Express Edger, you will work with and among a specific people group, bringing the Gospel to oral learners who have never heard. You will work with strategic input from the Edge Leadership Team (ELT) and strategy coordinators.
Express positions fall under four different categories based on the type of assignment. Teams can be formed of Express Edgers in the same or differing categories according to need:
Orality Strategist Interns: These teams will delve into the world of story-telling, developing a culturally relevant set of stories for a specific people group who do not have Scriptures available in their heart language. Most OSI teams will work with a strategy coordinator or player coach who has determined that the people group can be reached by oral means. As a member of an OSI team, you will receive training in cross-cultural story crafting. An orality coach will guide you through each phase of your project. Working alongside national partners, you will come to understand the needs of the people, discover key areas of concern and anxiety, pinpoint crucial worldview concepts, and look for redemptive analogies that will be helpful in sharing the Story (Gospel) and seeing house churches emerge and reproduce. You will equip national partners to continue developing biblical stories for use in evangelism, discipleship, and leadership training so that the emerging church-planting movement will be self-sustaining long after you leave.
Creative Arts Strategist Interns: These teams will experience the richness and beauty of South Asian culture as they develop and implement strategies using the creative arts (music, drama, dance, visual art) to communicate the Gospel with an unreached people group. Under guidance from the ELT, you will research local artistic resources, facilitate national creative artists in the creation of biblically accurate, culturally appropriate creative art forms, and mentor local believers in how to utilize these works of art in sharing the Gospel and planting reproducing house churches.
Joshua & Caleb Teams: Like the biblical characters from which these teams are named, these teams will explore the land, going into unreached places to encounter the lostness of the people, experience the richness of the culture, and learn how information and truth is communicated in that environment. As a member of one of these teams, you will be assigned to a specific area as a scout. You will explore the land and people groups, looking for people of peace and spiritual receptiveness as, with guidance from the ELT, you determine what type of strategy and follow-up needs to be done. As people come to faith, you will group them into house churches and use them to help determine what methods should be used to further the Gospel in this people group. You will report your findings and then utilize your discoveries to develop and, time permitting, begin implementing a strategy to effectively communicate God’s Word to a people who have yet to be reached with the Gospel.
Epic Storying Trainers: These teams will be known as storytellers among the people with whom they are living. As part of these teams, you will use a set of stories that has already been developed to train nationals to use stories in church planting and multiplication throughout a specific people group. Epic Storying Trainers will receive training in cross-cultural story crafting in order to equip nationals with the tools they need to craft further stories for their people group. You will dedicate yourselves to training and empowering nationals to craft and tell stories cross-culturally among your particular people group. You will see nationals come to know and share the Story, from the Beginning to the early Church, in culturally appropriate ways that ensure that they are successful in gathering believers into groups that reproduce in multiplying churches.
